Little Beauty Helpers: Kiehl’s Micro-Blur Skin Perfector

I’m just going to be upfront about it – I’m a Kiehl’s fan. Some products work for me and some don’t, but by and large, most of their products do have great efficacy and those that are suited for my skin type tend to produce pleasing results.

I am an existing user of their Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA+++ UVA (I purchased the super-sized version last year) and have tried their Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream. But those are reviews for another day. Today, I want to share about my new little beauty helper that does wonders at creating a beautiful even skin surface for my make-up while incorporating skincare properties – their Micro-Blur Skin Perfector.

The newest beauty trend I’ve observed is “skin blurring” products. These are technically priming products that minimise the appearance of pores and imperfections on your skin, giving an illusion of perfectly smooth skin almost like having a softening filter over your face.

Kiehl’s has their Micro-Blur Skin Perfector which falls into this category of products but with an added advantage – skincare benefits.

The Micro-Blur Skin Perfector comes in a 30ml tube and retails at $52.

Kiehl's Micro-Blur - Ingredients

While most primers don’t have any positive long-term effects on your skin, the Micro-Blur Skin Perfector is backed by a clinical studies and has a formula that includes nourishing skincare ingredients. These ingredients improve skin quality and delivers lasting benefits to the pores as well as to skin texture.

  • Lipo Hydroxy Acid (LHA)
A gentle exfoliation ingredient that is used in the Micro-Blur Skin Perfector to leave skin looking more radiant and smoother.
  • Lentil Extract
Found to help strengthen and tighten pores and work towards providing a nearly poreless appearance over time.
  • Bark Extract
Extracted from the Guyana-native Bootlace Tree (Eperua Falcata), this helps to smooth texture of skin

Also, it is non-comedogenic and claims that it will not clog pores. So far, my skin feels comfortable with it and I have not observed any clogging after use even over long hours. Do note that this product contains silicone.

Kiehl's Micro-Blur - Texture

When you squeeze a little dollop of product onto your fingertips, you’ll instantly realise that its not a creamy textured product nor does it feel like a gel. It’s an interesting gooey but lightweight texture. It absorbs well when you smooth it across skin and doesn’t feel heavy or even waxy as it is advertised. It glides on to skin easily and smoothly like a dream!

Kiehl's Micro-Blur - Finish

Use sparingly. It is sheer upon application and you don’t need a lot of it. Slowly dab on the product over areas of your face and then spread it out.

The finish is more towards dewy which is a big plus for me. I love having a dewy appearance as I feel that it makes me look younger and fresher than if I were to have matte skin. I find matte skin a bit “flat”. Not to say that you’re going to get very shiny with this of course. The skin perfector does start to turn slightly matte after initial application but it will never get completely matte and you’ll still get a nice subtle glow with this product thanks to the spherical and flat-shaped light diffusers in the product. The result is a soft, natural blurred appearance! I don’t have oily skin and my skin tends to be dry, so this is perfect for me.

It’s advised to use this over your UV protection and after a BB cream (optional). I tried using it over the Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream and I find that it works BEAUTIFULLY together. I know there are many Kiehl’s fans out there who love the medium coverage the Kiehl’s BB cream affords but I personally find the BB cream so-so, I don’t think it’s exceptional and I find that it doesn’t apply well on my skin, I’m not sure why. I think the problem is that it seems to accentuate the lines on my skin. However, when used with this Micro-Blur Skin Perfector, there’s both that medium coverage and sleek smooth finish – just amazing!

You can also use it at night as the final step of a skincare routine. This was surprising to me.

Kiehl's Micro-Blur - Verdict

I think it’ll be hard for me to go back to using BB creams without the Micro-Blur Skin Perfector. It is an amazing primer that is so wonderful to use. It is also a skincare product and leaves my skin feeling and looking fresh after use. As to whether there are really long-term benefits, I would like to think it does play a part in keeping my skin constantly nourished. After all, I’d rather have a “make-up” product on my face that is taking care of it rather than just beautifying my skin.

The thing is this is a whopping $52, the same price as their BB cream. For a 30ml tube, this is really a premium! Objectively, this is a costly investment if you view it as just a “make-up” or cosmetic item on your dresser, but if you look at it as a skincare product that you can use at night as well, maybe the $52 does seem more justified. That said, you don’t need to use a lot of it and a little actually goes a long way.

I’m crossing my fingers that they’ll release a super-sized version of this at that great value price that their Ultra Light Daily UV Defense comes in. I’d snap that up in a heartbeat to stock up. That’s how much I love this product.

Do feel free to leave a comment below if you have any questions about the Micro-Blur Skin Perfector or any of the Kiehl’s products mentioned in this post! I’ll be happy to answer them based on my personal experience.

I’m not fond of the BB cream either… It’s too creamy/watery for me and doesn’t absorb quick enough into my skin.

Would have to go into the stores to test out the texture of the skin perfector for myself!

I think BB creams are a hit or miss sometimes. I prefer to use a foundation if I want coverage and if I wanted such sheer coverage a BB cream affords, I would use a tinted moisturiser or mix a dab of foundation with my favourite moisturiser. I think BB creams can be convenient, but so far, I’ve not much success with most brands – after all it always boils down to whether it blends or not and with only a few limited shades available, it’s a tall order to get a good match!

I hear that the Dior BB cream is good and I’m testing out White Label Premium Placenta BB cream and so far it is looking good (matches my skin tone without turning my skin ashy) and has an amazing smooth glide-on texture – no oil slick feelings here – seems promising enough. Fingers crossed and if it rocks, I’ll be reviewing it!

I have tried the texture for a few brands, but they are all too thick and/or watery for me. My favourite, and one that I’ve been using for a long time, is the shu uemura BB mousse. It gets absorbed very quickly, and provides light/fair coverage. Just enough to tone down the redness in my complexion. If I want more coverage, I’d just apply a layer of powder foundation over my acne scars. That, so far, has been the best combination for me. Very easy and fuss-free. Another brand that I’ve tried in store and seemed pretty good is Mac. But I’ve quite a number of shu uemura UV under base mousse (all given free, #firstworldproblem! If you would like to review their mousse or cleaning oil, let me know! I have loads of samples!), so that will have to wait.

I would love to try the Dior, but I’m afraid of the price tag :p

Do let me know how it goes with White Label!

Hello… You use microblur after or before bb cream? I think microblur is a primer, so we use this after bb cream. How about your opinion? Thanks.

      Hey Gaby,

I’ve used the product on it’s own or with a bb cream underneath. Kiehl’s recommends that it be used after the bb cream.

I understand where you’re coming from. Most primers are applied before the BB cream. I personally have just followed the recommended directions. 🙂

      Cheers!
